IEEE802.3 capacitors

18 June 2003 Passive Components

New 1808 and 1812 chip style 2 kV capacitors from Murata are suitable for IEEE802.3 and line circuit tasks for telecoms Ethernet applications. They have dielectrics with very high breakdown voltages and an optimised internal electrode structure.

Already established in the market, Murata says that the GR44 series of 250 V d.c. MLCCs is extensively used in tip and ring applications and now it is extended to take in the technical requirements of LANs. The new parts incorporate base metals for both the internal and external electrodes, nickel inside and copper outside. These keep the price down and put performance up, according to the manufacturer.

The IEEE802.3 standard requires the insulation of capacitors to withstand 1,5 kV a.c. or 2,25 kV d.c. for one minute each, or 10 2,4 kV pulses. The DC 2 kV GR44 series is guaranteed to meet all these tests.

These capacitors offer stable performance due to X7R temperature characteristic (15%, -55°C/125°C). As true chip devices, they bring all the usual space saving with easy processing - this helps the design and assembly of smaller, more compact products. The 1808 size gives values from 100 pF to 1,5 nF and the 1812 from 1 nF to 4,7 nF.
