CAN transceiver IC designed for high-speed differential mode transmission

2 July 2003 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT Asset Management

Atmel's high-speed CAN bus transceiver IC, the ATA6660, is manufactured using 0,8 µm BCDMOS process technology, which supports operation of up to 45 V and is optimised for applications in harsh environments.

The ATA6660 is especially designed for high-speed differential mode data transmission such as in AC motor drives in the large-scale equipment industry. As required for high-speed data transmission, the baud rate can be adjusted up to 1 Mbaud. The device is fully compatible to ISO 11898, the international standard for high-speed CAN data communication (CAN-C).

Atmel says its objective is to provide various solutions to meet system designers' diverse needs. The company has introduced several bus interface ICs designed for dedicated applications in recent years. For automotive diagnostics, a K-line driver (U6812B) is available, for automotive comfort applications such as sunroof handling and seat memory, a LIN bus transceiver is in development and will be available end of 2003; and a low-speed CAN transceiver B10011S is designed for 24 V trailer/truck applications.

To minimise EMC problems, the ATA6660 incorporates a controlled slew rate that prevents unsymmetrical transients on the bus lines. The receiver's control feature helps to reduce RF interference, caused by signals on the two bus lines, to a minimum. In well-designed bus configurations this feature means filter design costs can be reduced drastically.

Several protection features such as overtemperature warning, full protection against short circuits and high-voltage bus line protection up to ±40 V are included. The device also meets strict automotive qualification demands (protection against conducted interference, EMC and 8 kV ESD protection), and it can withstand transients according to ISO/TR 7637/1.
