Safer vehicles with tyre pressure sensors

16 July 2003 Electronics Technology

Infineon Technologies acquisition of Norwegian manufacturer SensoNor will add tyre pressure sensors to its portfolio. These collect data such as pressure, temperature, and motion and transmit them to a dashboard display over a radio link. Infineon plans to use the information delivered by the sensors not only to display a warning, but also to feed them into the controllers of other safety systems such as ESP or ABS. In the USA tyre pressure monitoring is required by law as from November. In addition to the sensors, the monitoring system comprises a microcontroller for each tyre, which processes the data, and a transmitter, which sends the information to the controller in the engine compartment by RF link. Infineon will integrate these discrete components into a single unit and launch it in two to three years' time. Systems that operate without a battery should be feasible at the end of the decade, it believes.
