Innovative products require a good manufacturing partner for success

30 July 2003 Manufacturing / Production Technology, Hardware & Services

In an increasingly competitive marketplace with a seemingly insatiable thirst for innovation, it is imperative to respond swiftly with new products. In view of this, Tellumat Contract Manufacturing division, an electronics assembly and manufacturing facility, offers end-to-end operational services.

These manufacturing solutions can improve time-to-market factors, asset utilisation, lower total cost and ultimately, improve market share and margins.

In a technology-driven global economy, companies are being called upon to be more responsive and more profit-conscious, as well as be sufficiently agile to accommodate market changes quickly and efficiently. Tellumat Contract Manufacturing can offer a full suite of design, engineering, manufacturing, logistics and post-manufacturing services. International customers have all the advantages of world leading services, and an exchange rate that favours international trade with South Africa.

The company has two key manufacturing concerns in South Africa:

* Specialised, niche products: using highly skilled personnel and very specialised equipment, this caters for extremely technical electronics required by niche industries. As an example, the company has contracted to Sailor to produce state-of-the-art maritime products. Core manufacturing processes include: surface mount assembly, component insertion, wave soldering, in-circuit test and functional testing, system integration and configuration and mechanical assembly.

* High volume, fine mechanical engineering: provides niche services to the military market. Capabilities range from prototyping through development and industrialisation, to large volume series production of assembled and completely knocked down (CKD) products. The in-house capabilities include tool making, CNC turning and milling, precision auto-turning, fine gear cutting, presswork and metal finishing. In the metal finishing department, processes include electroplating, aluminium anodising, brass passivation and chemical cleaning.

The company has a skills structure that provides excellent back-up facilities for large volume manufacturing. This enables its engineers to rapidly expand output and reduce the time-to-market factor.

Tellumat Contract Manufacturing is well-suited to design houses that require a strong, synergistic partnership with an electronics manufacturer, offering superior capabilities in both manufacturing and high calibre testing. It provides turnkey solutions concerning industrialisation of product, works to ensure that product is manufacturable, and that yields and repeatability are achievable. All facilities are digitally-configured to improve output efficiencies.

In the procurement cycle, the company ensures advantages of economies of scale as it has access to a massive library of components. Tellumat Contract Manufacturing compiles information, building it into a well structured bill of materials. All processes conform to ISO 9000 and enjoy the support of Tellumat's Quality Assurance division in optimising a product design.

For Tellumat its core offering lies in manufacturing, catering specifically for clients who wish to remain focused on design and marketing. Its own innovative in-house design team offers complementary skills to assist in refining product design. Notably, Tellumat designers are leaders in the field of digital signal processing, and have a strong reputation for innovation in the field of radio frequency products.

Tellumat's Customer Service Centre is an allied business unit providing specialised after sales service to both its clients' customers as well as other independent clients. Customer Service is fully digitally-configured to identify the precise version of the design in question, and to swiftly and accurately diagnose faults.

Understanding solder dross: causes and control strategies
Truth Electronic Manufacturing Editor's Choice Manufacturing / Production Technology, Hardware & Services
Dross formation is an inevitable consequence of wave soldering. It occurs when molten solder comes into contact with oxygen, forming metal oxides that float on the surface of the solder bath. Over time, this oxidation byproduct accumulates and must be removed to maintain solder quality and process consistency.
