Linear Technology's LTC1588 and LTC1589, are the first 12- and 14-bit current output DACs with a software programmable output range. The SoftSpan DACs are programmed with a 3-wire serial interface to operate in any one of six possible output ranges: two unipolar (0 to 5 V, 0 to 10 V) and four bipolar (±2,5, ±5, ±10 and -2,5 to 7,5 V). All output spans have ultra-precise specifications of ±1LSB INL, ±1LSB DNL and superior gain specifications over the industrial temperature range. Designers no longer need precision resistors, switches and external amplifiers for range switching. Fewer components means easier and faster design. A single board design can also serve several applications, such as instrumentation and data acquisition, without requiring jumpers for different board versions. The only external components needed to get the SoftSpan DAC running are a precision 5 V reference, a dual op-amp and a feedback capacitor. The LTC1588/9 come in 16-pin SSOP packages.
