Stereo sound audio encoder for TVs

13 August 2003 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

Motorola SPS claims its MC44C401 is the industry's first single-chip, Multi-Channel Television Sound (MTS) stereo audio encoder designed to allow consumers to enjoy high-fidelity stereo and surround sound more easily on their televisions. The MC44C401 is a CMOS implementation of an advanced BTSC compatible stereo encoder for makers of set-top boxes, VCRs, DVDs and other consumer electronics. Motorola's SPS says that until today, delivering hi-fi stereo sound over a simple RF coaxial cable was too expensive. Since most consumers rely on this method of interconnect, they had to settle for 'mono' quality sound. The MC44C401's digital audio processing engine preserves the full fidelity of surround sound and other audio coding schemes with performance not degraded by copy protection technologies. Cost benefits include the elimination of manual alignment of filters, phase controls, and composite signal amplitude. Compelling cost/benefit features are: integrated ADC input and DAC output circuitry and the sync separator. The encoder boasts a high over sampling rate of 187,5 kHz - up to four times greater than industry standard CD players.
