Microchip says its new enhanced standalone CAN device provides fast data throughput, efficient data-byte filtering and generates start of frame output. The MCP2515 has a 40 MHz maximum clock-input speed and a 10 MHz high-speed SPI interface. This faster throughput enables CAN messages to be processed and transferred to the host microcontroller in a much shorter time than achievable with the its original device. The device can filter messages based on the first two data-bytes and the 11-identifier bits which reduces the microcontroller overhead when supporting high-layer protocols like DeviceNet. It also offers features for implementing time-slots in deterministic systems such as Time Triggered CAN. A one-shot mode ensures that a message will attempt to transmit once, regardless of arbitration loss or frame error. The start-of-frame output simplifies time-slot-based protocols and CAN bus diagnostics for determining early bus degradation. Used in automotive, robotics, power supply, test and semiconductor equipment, the MCP2515 is available in industrial temperature range in PDIP and SOIC packages.
