Ethernet-based remote monitoring and control solution

8 October 2003 Test & Measurement

The Ethernet-based ADAM-6000 series modules from ProMicro have been developed to integrate I/O, data acquisition and networking into one module to provide a cost-effective and true remote monitoring and control solution.

The modules are based on the popular Ethernet networking standards used today in most business environments. Users can easily add ADAM-6000 I/O modules to existing Ethernet networks or use them in new Ethernet-enabled e-manufacturing networks. The modules feature a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet chip and support the popular industrial Modbus/TCP protocol over TCP/IP for data connection as well as supporting UDP protocol over Ethernet networking.

With UDP/IP, the I/O modules can actively send I/O data streams to eight Ethernet nodes. Through Ethernet networking or a HMI/SCADA system, or controller, the user can access or gather realtime data from the Ethernet-enabled DA&C modules. This data can be integrated within a business system to immediately create valuable, competitive business information.

ADAM-6000 I/O series feature pre-built intelligent mathematical functions to empower the system capacity. The digital input modules offer counter or totalliser functions, while the digital output modules provide pulse or delay output functions. The analog input modules provide max/min/average data calculations, while the analog output modules provide a PID loop control function.

Its design concept is to enable the ultimate cost-effective I/O usage for diverse applications. Commonly used I/O types are brought together into one module. This design concept not only makes good use of I/O channels and saves spare module cost, but also effectively speeds up I/O related operations. For small DA&C systems or standalone control units, ADAM-6000's mixed I/O design can easily fit application needs by simply using one or two modules.

With additional embedded control modules, ADAM-6000 can very easily create a localised, less complex, and more distributed I/O architecture. Each module is embedded with a Web page to display realtime I/O data value, alarm and module status over LAN or Internet. Using any Java-executable Internet browser, users can easily monitor realtime I/O data value and alarm in any place around the world.

The modules allow users to modify or create their own Web page to monitor the status of remote I/O modules. Each ADAM-6000 series comes with an embedded sample Java applet Web page as well as step-by-step instructions to write a customised Java applet.
