Switched capacitor voltage converters and inverters

5 November 2003 Power Electronics / Power Management

Analog Devices' ADM660/ADM8660 are high current CMOS switched capacitor voltage converter ICs and the ADM8828/ADM8829 are switched capacitor voltage inverter ICs with shutdown.

The ADM660/ADM8660 invert the input voltage, producing VOUT = -VIN. The inverting scheme is ideal for generating a negative rail in a single-supply system. Only two small external capacitors are needed for the charge pump. Output currents up to 50 mA with greater than 90% efficiency are achievable. A frequency control (FC) input pin is used to select either 25 kHz or 120 kHz charge pump operation, optimising the capacitor sizes.

For applications that demand a higher voltage, the ADM660 can be used to double the input voltage, VOUT = 2 X VIN. Output voltages of 14 V maximum are attainable. In shutdown mode, the ADM660/ADM8660 consume 300 nA of current.

The ADM8828/ADM8829 are charge pump voltage inverters that generate a negative supply from a positive input. Input voltages ranging from +1,5 V to +5,5 V can be inverted into a -1,5 V to -5,5 V output supply. This inverting scheme is ideal for generating a negative rail in single-power supply systems. Only two small external capacitors are needed. Output currents up to 25 mA with greater than 99% efficiency are achievable. The ADM8828 also features a low power shutdown (SHDN) pin that can be used to disable the device and reduce the quiescent current to 20 nA.

ADM660/ADM8660 key features: 100 mA output current; 2,2 µF or 10 µF capacitors; only 0,3 V drop at 30 mA load; 1,5 V to 7 V supply; 600 µA quiescent current; selectable charge pump frequency (25 kHz/120 kHz).

ADM8828/ADM8829 key features: 99% voltage conversion efficiency; 18 Ω output resistance; high output current; shutdown function; require only two 1 µF capacitors; 1,5 to 5,5 V input range; 600 mA quiescent current; 20 nA shutdown current (ADM8828).
