Subsecond elapsed time counter

11 February 2004 Electronics Technology

Dallas Semiconductor's DS1318, a 44-bit, binary, elapsed time counter with 244 µs resolution, combines a 32-bit 'seconds' counter, a 12-bit 'subseconds' counter, periodic interrupt/alarm, and programmable square-wave output in a 24-pin TSSOP package. The elapsed time counter's 44-bit binary counter increments once every 244 µs. By using a software algorithm, the device can derive time of day, week, month, and year, thereby serving as a realtime clock. The square-wave output can be selected from 32,768 kHz, 8,192 kHz, 4,096 kHz, or 1 Hz. The DS1318 monitors Vcc, and when a power-fail occurs, it write-protects the internal registers, and switches to backup power to prevent data corruption. In low-power mode, the oscillator maintains timekeeping down to 1,3 V, consuming less than 1 µA of current. Address and data are transferred using a standard parallel-address bus.
