Panel light pipes feature dual-lens geometry for improved display

10 March 2004 Opto-Electronics

A 5 mm Panel Light Pipe (PLP 5) Series featuring a new lens geometry that creates improved lighting intensity for use with surface mounted or through- hole LEDs is available from BivarOpto. The PLP 5 design enables designers to immediately locate PCBs directly behind panels with assurance of brighter, evenly-lighted indicators.

The lens geometry at the base of the light pipe creates a concave 'collector' to gather the full brightness and intensity of the LED, to concentrate and forward it to the convex viewing surface for optimal light distribution and uniform appearance. The PLP 5 Series can be 'press fit' by hand from the front of the display panel (fits into 5,6 mm hole). No additional hardware or special tools are required, reducing assembly time and costs. For added design versatility and uniformity, they are available in lengths from 3,2-38 mm in increments of 3,2 mm, in industry standard colours of red, green, yellow, blue and clear. The tight fitting design also protects against RFI and EMI 'noise leaks'.
