Atmel has added three new members to its megaAVR Flash microcontroller family. The mega48, mega88 and mega168 are designed to address the requirements of battery operated and portable applications. Designed to help engineers reduce design time and development costs, these AVR devices combine a code efficient and powerful microcontroller with low power Flash memory technology.
Single cycle execution at 24 MHz, an optimised instruction set and an efficient on-chip hardware multiplier make the new AVR devices capable of performing tasks that earlier would require a much more expensive microcontroller or a DSP. At the minimum operating voltage of 1,8 V, clock speed can be as high as 6 MHz.
The three devices include numerous features: The integrated analog-to-digital converter removes an external component from the system. The on-chip calibrated RC-oscillator can eliminate the external crystal or resonator. Lower power consumption will reduce the cost of the power supply and extend battery life. Battery life may be extended even further, as the devices operate with a supply voltage down to 1,8 V. The system clock can be controlled from the application, so the clock speed can be adjusted to the optimum frequency for each function to save power. Typical power consumption at 1 MHz, 1,8 V is less than 250 µA, at 32 kHz less than 15 µA. The self programmable Flash lets the AVR write to its own program memory, enabling remote updates of the program and parameter storage in the Flash memory.
