Compact inductive travel feedback system

With a new inductive distance measuring system, Balluff's BIL covers the 20 and 160 mm range for non-contacting analog sensors. The new distance and travel feedback system uses the non-contacting principle of magneto-induction. Said to be precise, flexible and rugged, it has housing dimensions of 15 x 15 x 95 mm and working range is 60 mm, making for a compact system.

The trend towards non-contacting position feedback systems is becoming rapidly apparent in industrial position and travel sensing. Here Balluff offers a versatile range of sensors covering anywhere from 0 to 4000 mm. The operating principle is determined by the application: short distances of up to 20 mm are covered by the BAW inductive analog proximity sensor. For applications between 50 and 4000 mm, the series BTL magnetostrictive transducers are suited. At a range of 200 to 2000 mm, the BOD optical distance sensors use triangulation to provide the position information. And when distances of 50 to 160 mm need to be covered, the innovative BIL system fills this gap.

The system has three main components: a sensor with sensing element, a processor unit and a permanent magnet used as the position marker. The sensing element consists of a planar coil with triangular windings that form a spiral. It has a flat core made of a soft magnetic material which is applied to the coil. This core increases the inductance of the coil, since it is highly magnetically conducting. When the position marker is moved over the coil, the magnetic field drives the core into saturation. In this area the core loses its magnetic properties. Saturation of the core on the broad base results in greater loss of inductance than at the tip. As the position of the magnet changes, the inductance changes continuously, allowing the actual position to be defined.

Contributing to the BIL's compact size are the fully integrated processing electronics. The non-linearity of the BIL is ±1%, repeat accuracy is ±0,1% and the resolution is less than and equal to 60 µm. The BIL does not have to be readjusted after each start, since each position has an absolute value. The BIL housing also offers IP67 protection.
