Locally manufactured protection devices

7 April 2004 News

Supprescraft has been manufacturing suppression components for the South African electronics industry for 24 years. The company has made significant investments in manufacturing technology and equipment in order to remain competitive in this high volume, high technology market and also provides a unique design service for interference suppression.

Driven by customer requirements for quantity and quality, Supprescraft says it is able to offer product manufactured to IEC specifications, competitively priced by world standards - even on small quantities of custom manufactured components.

Manufacturing a wide range of suppression components including inductors, capacitors, auto suppressors, spike and surge mains filters and a range of transformers, Supprescraft says quality tests are performed on each and every component to assure reliability in virtually any operating condition.

* Capacitors - Supprescraft's range of metallised film polyester, polypropylene and polycarbonate dipped and box capacitors are manufactured to IEC 384 standards and can be custom-produced to the AC/DC voltages required. Specialising in small batches at short turnaround times, the range of capacitors covers units of 0,001 to 10 µF at 63 to 630 V d.c. as well as 250 and 500 V a.c. for use in X and Y suppression applications.

* Inductors - Supprescraft's range of powdered iron toroidal inductors and single and double wound ferrite toroidal inductors for radio frequency interference suppression, suppression of power controls and for use as current compensated chokes, are manufactured to IEC standards. Windings are arranged symmetrically so that with the normal operating current, the magnetic flux produced within the magnetic material compensate each other. This ensures that material saturation is avoided. Sizes range from 15 to 78 mm with ratings of up to 30 A.

* Auto suppressors - the control of noise from electrical circuits in vehicles can either be suppressed at the source or noise limiting circuits can be installed at the receiver. Components to handle both approaches are manufactured by Supprescraft to IEC standards. Auto suppression capacitors with values as low as 0,0047 to units of 2,2 µF are offered, as well as various other RFI filtering and suppression components are available at short turnaround times. Supprescraft also offers a comprehensive data sheet which provides full details and guidance on vehicle noise suppression.

* Mains and spike/surge filters - Supprescraft manufactures a range of mains filters and spike suppression filters which are designed to suppress radio frequency interference in single and three-phase electrical machinery, appliances and sophisticated electronic and electrical equipment to CISPR and Post Office requirements. For use in applications of up to 30 A, the filters incorporate selected inductors and appropriate X and Y capacitors. The filters are offered in four and five-wire, XY and in-line versions for equipment with or without earthing. Supprescraft mains filters provide for a rated voltage of 250 V a.c. at 50 Hz.

* Transformers - Supprescraft manufactures a range of transformers for use in telecommunication systems and switched mode power supplies. Transformers are available for DC isolation, base drive, power switching and current sensing in a choice of packaging configurations. Transformers can be wound on bobbins or overwound on toroids and Supprescraft will custom design and manufacture to specification as required.
