Supprescraft spike-suppression filters are designed to protect sophisticated electronic and electrical equipment from the spikes and surges of current and voltage overloads and from noise, from the AC mains.
They are used for computers, data processors, word processors, electronic cash registers, process control systems, laboratory and medical equipment etc. These filters are supplied as discrete units in metal boxes and are designed to be incorporated into a variety of built-up configurations such as protected mains socket outlets, or protected feed-through units for permanent connection to the AC mains.
The circuit diagram of the typical Supprescraft Spike-suppression Filter module is shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1
These modules are manufactured according to BS 613.1977, IEEE,STD 587 Category B and are rated for 250 V a.c. operation. The maximum impulse current is greater than 5000 A (peak), and energy rating is 40 J. They have less than 3,5 mA earth leakage and are rated for use from -10 to +85°C. Modules available are: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 A.
Figure 2
Figure 2 shows how an impulse of 5 kV in 1 µs is slowed down and clamped to a nominal level of 500 V, with no overshoot. This provides sufficient protection for most applications. In Figure 3 the RF interference attenuation graph is shown.
Figure 3
The integral EMI/RFI filter provides high attenuation to interference signals in both common and differential modes. The design of special spike-suppression filters with improved parameters may also be considered.
Plastic can versions
These spike-suppression filters are also offered enclosed in plastic cylindrical containers and are suitable for applications where less stringent requirements are called for than the metal box type. Single Pi network and Double pi network configurations are used here.
