8 bit microcontroller features in-system programming and 32K to 64K flash

Winbond Electronics Corporation America, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Winbond Electronics Corporation has introduced the W78LE58 and the W78LE516, two new 8 bit CMOS microcontrollers featuring in-system programming (ISP), economical flash size (32K for W78LE58 or 64K for W78LE516) and flexible operating voltage (2,4 to 5,5 V). These new products reduce the chip count necessary to perform the In-System Programming function by 66%, it claims.

They are suitable for consumer and communication applications that require re-programming capabilities, including the rapidly growing digital appliance market and the worldwide communication controller market. In-system programming (ISP) decouples the hardware and software development, providing OEMs with the ability to download the final software code at the last minute prior to going into production. The result is just-in-time production and a less expensive end product, key benefits for the fast-paced consumer and communication markets. The technology also allows local or remote code update for the end product in an after-sales environment for feature or maintenance upgrades.

The optimum flash ROM sizes (32 or 64K application ROM and 4K ISP ROM) address growing PCB space constraints for many consumer products. The wide operating voltage range allows OEM to design products for both the battery operated (3 V) market and the traditional 5 V line-powered market with one stock item.

The W78LE58 and the W78LE516 are the latest in a full line of industry standard, 8052-microcontroller products from Winbond including mask-programmable ROM, flash ROM, ROM-less, Turbo and extended-IO microcontroller technologies.

Supported by major device programmer vendors, both the W78LE58 and the W78LE516 feature an additional four I/O port pins (over the industry standard I/O), up to 24 MHz operating frequency and special data scrambling feature for highest ROM data security. Each microcontroller has 32 KB or 64K of multi-time programmable (MTP) flash ROM for the main application code, and 4 KB of MTP ROM for ISP code to download data through the on-chip serial port or parallel I/O ports to the on-board 32/64K MTP ROM. The 32/64K and 4K ROMs can also be programmed by the standard device programmer. Each chip also provides 512 bytes of on-chip RAM, including 256 bytes of auxiliary RAM and 64 KB of program memory address space.

The products come packaged in 40-pin DIP, 44-pin PLCC and 44-pin PQFP.
