The quest is on for energy efficient designs

30 June 2004 News

Anyone with a passion for design and/or efficient lighting is invited to enter the Eskom Energy Efficiency Design Competition for 2004.

This competition, with R100 000 worth of prize money to be won, was initiated in 1999 by Eskom ElektroWise to stimulate the creative and cost-effective design of luminaires, while promoting the use of compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) in the residential sector.

The goal of the luminaire design competition is to demonstrate that efficient lighting technologies, such as fluorescent technology and LEDs, can be used in very modern and attractive luminaires intended for residential lighting.

The building design competition is aimed at encouraging the design and production of the most innovative and efficient lighting in the commercial and industrial sectors and persuading decision-makers to purchase these highly efficient solutions.

The categories for the 2004 EEDC are:

* Residential luminaire design (students) - group prize money: R10 000; individual prize money: R10 000.

* Residential luminaire design (professional) - prize money: R20 000.

* Best energy efficiency lighting design in a commercial building - prize money: R30 000.

* Best energy efficiency lighting design in an industrial building - prize money: R30 000.

The closing date for entries is 3 October 2004. More information on the design, entry requirements, evaluation criteria and technical specifications, as well as entry forms, is available from the competition organisers, Communication Xellence.
