New software drives the evolution and adoption of model-based design

30 June 2004 Design Automation

According to The Mathworks, new capabilities in its Simulink for controls, signal processing, and communications, support a broader range of applications. The new features enable faster development cycle times, eliminate manual coding errors and facilitate innovation and exploration in control, signal processing and communication system development.

Simulink 6 contains many new features that support large-scale, embedded system development projects. With new component-based modelling and unified data-dictionary management capabilities, the company says that teams can build and share multiple configurations and subsystems design efficiently within and across organisations. This new capability also provides enhanced performance for engineers integrating, simulating and optimising large models containing hundreds of thousands of parameters and blocks.

"Model-Based Design has transformed the way embedded systems are developed by replacing paper documents, physical prototypes, hand-coding and decoupled testing with executable models, simulation, automatic code generation and tests tightly integrated with design," said Will Strauss, president of Forward Concepts. "By bringing Model-Based Design to larger-scale development projects and demanding realtime applications, and by enabling multiple engineering groups to contribute to a common design, Simulink 6 will have a substantial impact on the way large and distributed teams can design, implement and test embedded systems."

The new version enables engineers to model, simulate, and implement more types of realtime systems and components, including RF electronics for wireless systems, and video and image processing systems. Simulink 6 is also practical for modelling and simulating drivelines for automotive, aerospace, and industrial equipment.
