Latest 3D microwave simulation design tool product now available

30 June 2004 Design Automation

CST Microwave Studio (MWS) is a specialist tool for the fast and accurate 3D EM simulation of high frequency problems for use in the expanding areas of: mobile communication, wireless design (Bluetooth), and signal integrity. Applications include: couplers, filters, planar structures, connectors, EMC and SAR problems, packages, and all kinds of antennas. Said to be exceptionally user friendly, this product from Computer Simulation Technology (CST) can quickly give designers an insight into the EM behaviour of their high frequency designs. CST has also now released service pack V5.0.2 for Microwave Studio.

Besides the company's flagship module, Time Domain Solver, CST MWS offers two further modules for specific applications: the Eigenmode and Frequency Domain Solvers. Filters for the import of specific CAD files and the extraction of SPICE parameters also enhance design possibilities and save time. In addition, CST MWS is embedded in a larger design environment through CST Design Studio whose open architecture provides a link with external simulators.

CST Microwave Studio is seen by an increasing number of engineers as an industry standard development tool. When CST MWS Version 5 was released it included 1300 functional changes over Version 4, with a noticeable cut in simulation time. The most significant features of Version 5 include:

* SmartGrid technology - the combination of the newly-implemented multilevel subgridding scheme (MSS), together with the precise structure representation offered by the PBA (perfect boundary approximation) and TST (thin sheet technique), enables highly accurate simulations with very high efficiency.

* Distributed computing - for multiport structures, parameter studies and optimisation.

* Interoperability - new and improved import/export options.

Designers of PCBs and packages who are using Cadence's Allegro products (previously Allegro PCB and Advanced Package Designer/Engineer) can also benefit from a direct interface to CST Microwave Studio. With the optional Allegro import link, signal integrity studies can be performed taking all 3D field propagation effects into consideration. This allows the easy transfer of a structure or selected structure parts, including all material properties and layer information, into CST MWS. Of particular significance to the design engineer is the transfer of all Allegro parameters to the CST MWS model, enabling parameter studies and the optimisation of the original parameter set.
