Partners in service and support excellence - AAD/Microchip

30 June 2004 DSP, Micros & Memory

Microchip Technology's highly cost-effective embedded control products offer the advantages of small size, high performance, low voltage/power operation and ease of development. So says local distributor, Arrow Altech Distribution (AAD), who adds that this enables timely and cost-effective embedded control product integration by customers. It says the company competes principally on the basis of the technical innovation and performance that these embedded control products have in the areas of speed, functionality, density, power consumption, reliability, packaging alternatives, price and availability.

Arrow Altech Distribution says that it differentiates itself from the local distribution crowd by focusing on new, innovative products and by offering unique services and value-added solutions. Through its total commitment to continuously improve service levels, it can offer customers a vast range of value-added services including design and engineering support, turnkey, kitting, Kanban (automated replenishment), buffer stock holding, programming and supply chain management.

Microcontrollers and digital signal controllers

Microchip Technology offers a broad portfolio of 8-bit microcontroller products, under the PIC brand name, that feature a unique, proprietary architecture. PIC microcontrollers combine high performance, low cost and small package size to offer one of the highest price/performance ratios in the industry. Based on a powerful RISC core, the PIC architecture provides users with an easy migration path from 8- to 84-pins among all families with little or no code change required.

The company's family of 16-bit dsPIC digital signal controllers is a series of high performance 16-bit microcontrollers, that, along with field reprogrammability, low power, small footprint and ease of use, combine the many features and capabilities of the PIC microcontroller architecture with the high performance capabilities of a DSP (digital signal processor) on a single-chip solution.

Mixed-signal analog and interface products

Microchip markets over 350 power management, linear, mixed-signal, thermal management and interface products. These include:

* Power management - CPU/system and voltage detectors; low dropout linear regulators (LDO); switching regulators; charge pumps; power MOSFET drivers; battery management ICs.

* Mixed signal - ADCs; digital potentiometers.

* Linear - op-amps; programmable gain amplifiers; comparators.

* Thermal management - temperature sensors; fan managers and predictive failure detectors.

* Interface - CAN communications; infrared communications; serial peripherals; LIN transceiver.

Memory and ASSP products

Microchip provides a broad portfolio of high performance serial EEPROMs. These are designed in extremely small package sizes and with very low operating voltages for both read and write functions. They also feature long data retention and high erase/write endurance.

Application-specific standard products (ASSP) are specialised devices that are designed to support specific end-user applications. ASSP device families currently include the KEELOQ family of secure data transmission products and the PowerSmart family of smart battery management products.

The dsPIC design contest

Over $30 000 in prizes including a Harley-Davidson motorcycle is being offered in the dsPIC design contest. The company has extended the purchase deadline for the dsPIC30F Digital Signal Controller Contest Kits ($139) to 24 July 2004. Designs are required to be submitted by 10 September 2004. See www.arrow.altech.co.za on how to enter.

Since Microchip continuously designs and manufactures new products, complete part numbers and specifications are available as a Product Selector Guide at www.microchip.com.
