ON Semiconductor claims its NCP144x series of 280 kHz and 560 kHz boost regulators offer design engineers low-cost power conversion solutions for a wide range of battery-operated applications.
Each of the four new current mode boost regulators features a 4 A/40 V integrated power switch that eliminates the need for an external FET - thus saving both cost and board space. The flexibility of the design allows the parts to operate in most power supply configurations, including boost, flyback, forward, inverting and SEPIC. Because the devices operate at voltages ranging from 2,7 V to 30 V, they accommodate numerous applications including test equipment, handheld meters, portable printers and computers, and process control.
The high 280 kHz or 560 kHz operating frequencies allow the use of smaller passive components. For added design flexibility, the device can be synchronised with an external frequency source - up to 500 kHz for the NCP1442 and NCP1443 and up to 1 MHz for the NCP1444 and NCP1445. A shutdown capability minimises battery drain by reducing the typical standby current draw to 12 µA.
The NCP144x devices come in a new low-profile PowerFLEX surface mount package. They include a comprehensive set of protection features that provide added power distribution stability.
