Switching and routing devices enable high bandwidth, networking applications

25 October 2000 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

Revealed at the Intel Developer Forum Conference, the Intel Media Switch Family of products enables advanced applications, such as voice over IP (VoIP), distance learning, streaming video, teleconferencing and corporate network videoconferencing with its multiservice capabilities including Quality of Service (QoS), Class of Service (CoS), multicasting, routing, bandwidth management and provisioning.

The family includes various silicon hardware and software building blocks that consist of: software, including driver application protocol interfaces and Layer 2 and Layer 3 protocol stacks; and royalty-free licensing of source code for application programming interfaces (APIs) that include code for all hardware dependent parts of the design, and protocols, when used to develop products with Intel Media Switch devices. Intel says this improves time-to-market for the customers.

"Intel is introducing a full suite of Ethernet switching solutions, including the silicon, software, and reference platforms to allow our customers to bring their products to market faster," said Sean Riley, General Manager, Intel Enterprise Components Division. "These components offer multi-service capabilities that not only enable voice, video and data over Ethernet, but also enable migration to Layer 2/3/4 application-aware switching platforms. For instance, supporting multiple realtime video streaming using IP multicasting or high-speed IP packet re-direction based on TCP socket information."

Intel's Media Switch Products include:

* IXE5418 Gigabit device - A single-chip, wire-speed, eight-port, Layer 2/3/4, switch/router that operates at 10/100/1000 Mbps. Uses embedded DRAM for packet storage to enable wire-speed performance.

* IXE2412 10/100 device - A single-chip, wire-speed, 24-port 10/100 plus two-port Gigabit, Layer 2/3/4 switch/router.

* IXE5150 Gigabit Crossbar device - A single-chip, eight-port, Layer 2/3/4, Gigabit crossbar with integrated packet storage. This device can be used for cascading multiple IXE2412 and IXE5418 devices to build a low-cost chassis or stacked switching appliances.

* LXT998 eight-port integrated switch device - A single chip, cascadable, eight-port, 10/100 integrated Layer 2 switch that permits QoS packet prioritisation for realtime data management for applications such as VoIP.

* LXT9785 eight-port 10/100 transceiver - An eight-port 10/100 transceiver supporting both half-duplex and full-duplex operation at 10 and 100 Mbps.

The software portfolio includes flexible RTOS-independent APIs and protocol stacks, which allow vendors to port them easily to new platforms. This suite of Ethernet components is part of the Intel Internet Exchange (IX) architecture, an end-to-end family of high-performance, scalable hardware and software development solutions designed to meet the growing performance requirements of modern networks.

Level One is represented in South Africa by ASIC Design Services.
