Robust 1200 V control ICs

14 July 2004 Power Electronics / Power Management

International Rectifier's new IR2214 and IR22141 devices are 1200 V-rated high voltage integrated circuits (HVICs) for industrial motor drive control. They can be used as a single-part solution in high voltage industrial systems for protection circuits as well as high- and low-side switching. Other devices rated at lower voltages typically use several components and bulky opto-couplers to accomplish the same switching and protection functions, says IR.

These half-bridge gate driver ICs are designed specifically for 400 V a.c., three-phase AC induction motor drives using a 550 V bus as well as brushless DC motors both from 10-20 hp. They simplify motor control design by integrating protection circuitry and eliminating the need for customised programming of protection algorithms. Both devices are the same, but the IR22141 includes a built-in active bias circuit that reduces external filtering. Output capability is 3 A for high voltage, high current IGBTs, MOSFETs and integrated power modules.

Both ICs include full soft-shutdown motor drive protection, detecting any de-saturation condition or under-voltage supply and sending fault feedback to the controller. Soft over-current shutdown avoids power node over- and under-shooting, protecting switching devices from damage. Special features include dedicated pins to trim turn-on, turn-off and soft shutdown switching time and synchronisation of the fault when used in three phase bridge circuits.

Other benefits include a full range rail-to-rail output stage that allows up to 20 V gate drive, which provides a larger safe operating area (SOA), compared to usual devices with 18 V gate drive capability. In addition, the under voltage lockout with hysteresis minimises the effects of power supply ripple and transients for safe gate drive and prevents IGBT overheating. Separate signal and output stage ground pins are included for emitter/source current sensing, matched delay outputs enable accurate switching control and the 3,3 V CMOS logic interfaces are compatible with most microcontrollers.
