Optical solutions for severe environments

11 August 2004 Interconnection Security Services & Risk Management

Souriau has developed a wide range of fibre-optic solutions, using its ELIO contact concept, for severe environments. These solutions are based on the basic development principles of being: easy to clean, easy to install, and easy to wire.

In the design of this concept, Souriau, with 6% of its sales invested in new product development, established a strong partnership with a leading aircraft manufacturer to develop the ELIO. The shape, material, size and performances were thus studied to comply with harsh environmental requirements. This optical contact is now a technology leader in 'easy to install and maintain' optical contacts within its market sector.

The design of ELIO also makes possible its use in other harsh environments, such as on board ships and submarines. ELIO is qualified for the navy, for use on tanks (army) and in Formula One cars. Among its most important features, ELIO incorporates a hermaphroditic optical contact that is easy to mount and dismount without any tool because of its patented boot technology.

Suitable for singlemode, multimode and plastic optical fibres, it is easy to clean without removing the contact from the connector.

With superior optical performances: typical IL <0,2 dB, and typical RL <-30 dB, the ELIO contacts can be fitted into standard Aeromil connectors such as ARINC 600, ARINC 700, and MIL-DTL-38999.
