Bidirectional level translators

Analog Devices offers bidirectional level translators that it says add functionality while saving on complexity and component count. The ADG3308 is the first model of a series of wide range logic level translators that operate from 1,2 to 5,5 V and offer data speeds up to 40 Mbps.
These devices differ from traditional bus switches in several ways: wider translation range; no need for DIR pin; translate in Up or Down direction; no need for external pull-up resistors; access to <2,5 V logic circuits from traditional 3,3 and 5 V ICs.
The features allow system designers to implement solutions using a mix of high and low voltage circuitry in an application without resorting to complex translation solutions involving many discrete components. A 1,5 V ASIC can easily communicate with a 3,3 V DAC when the ADG3308 is placed in the signal path between the devices. In addition, the ADG3308 does not have an external DIR pin to select the data direction - it is automatically sensed by each individual channel in the device, allowing adjacent channels to transmit data in opposite directions simultaneously. This increases throughput over solutions requiring separate read/write cycles.
