Resonant circuits as found in high-voltage applications such as electronic ballasts for fluorescent lamps are exposed to heavy thermal loads. Epcos has specially developed two new series of capacitors with metallised polypropylene films for these circuits. They cover the capacitance range from 1,0 to 33 nF with a maximum ripple current capability of 700 V rms, equivalent to 2000 V d.c. Pulse strength has been increased to 6500 V/μs.
The new film capacitors are available with lead spacings of 10 mm for capacitances up to 12 nF and 15 mm for higher values. The new design shrinks case size by an average of 30% in comparison with predecessor types. The plastic cases, which comply with UL 94 V-0, vary in size from 4 x 9 x 13 mm to 9 x 17,7 x 18 mm, depending on capacitance and rated voltage. The maximum operating temperature permitted is specified at 110°C. The program comprises tolerance ranges of ±20% (M), ±10% (K), ±5% (J) and ±2,5% (H).
