With its launch of Audrey, a new kind of Internet appliance for the home, 3Com has confirmed QNX's status as a premier software platform for Net-connected consumer devices.
"QNX technology powers a greater variety of Internet appliances, in more countries, than any other commercial operating system," said Greg Bergsma, Vice President of North America operations at QNX Software Systems. "Now, with the release of 3Com's Audrey device, the list of QNX-powered web appliances includes everything from devices that sit on your kitchen counter to multimedia phones, MP3 jukeboxes, Internet TVs, personal web tablets, set-top boxes, and more."
Simple, personal and deployable anywhere in the home, Audrey builds on key features of the QNX realtime platform, which offers media-rich Internet applications, an embeddable GUI and a realtime operating system - all on a small memory footprint. For instance, 3Com's engineers took advantage of QNX's customisable look-and-feel - a critical feature for the Net appliance market - to create a dramatically simple, yet highly functional, Internet experience, says QNX Software Systems.
"By providing a rich foundation of ready-to-customise software, QNX helped 3Com focus on developing unique applications, such as a scheduler that gives order to today's busy families," said Don Fotsch, Vice President and General Manager, 3Com Internet Appliance Division. "Better yet, QNX's robust architecture, proven in thousands of mission-critical applications, enables Audrey to deliver something just as important: a reliable, maintenance-free user experience."
A market-proven platform
According to QNX Software Systems, Audrey now joins a growing roster of commercially-available QNX-based web appliances available in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Scandinavia, Singapore, the UK and other countries. Many of the QNX technologies used in Audrey are now available in the QNX realtime platform, which developers can download free for non-commercial purposes at get.qnx.com
