Spring contact connector aids portable equipment design

3 November 2004 Interconnection

With a contact diameter of 0,9 mm and a minimum pitch of 2,2 mm, FCI's spring contact connectors help reduce the size and increase the reliability of interconnections between portable equipment and docking stations, says the company.

Handling battery charging and data transfer functions in mobile phone and industrial handheld applications, the standard spring contact product range comprises 2, 3, 4 and 12 position vertical and 4 and 6 position right angle connectors. The connector's modular nature means that product variants with more positions are feasible.

A combination of high contact force and a typical contact deflection of 1 mm, means the spring contact connector offers designers reliable operation. Pin operation force is rated at 0,5 ±0,1 N at 0,8 mm compressed with a minimum contact retention force specified at 4,9 N per contact. The connector will endure a minimum of 10 000 cycles.

A simple 3-part construction, each spring contact is composed of a brass top pin and bottom ferrule and stainless steel spring. 10 μm gold over nickel plating throughout ensures the durability of the connector and a contact resistance performance of 50 mΩ. The connector's glass-filled black thermoplastic pin housing is designed to withstand reflow solder processing and to support an optional pick-and-place connector cap for automated assembly.

Electrical performance is characterised by a maximum current rating of 2 A, a minimum insulation resistance of 1000 MΩ and a withstand voltage of 500 V a.c. at 60 Hz for one minute.
