CPCI system housing has optimised features

17 November 2004 Manufacturing / Production Technology, Hardware & Services

'Inside larger than outside' - is how Rittal describes its new 19" (482,6 mm) housings for CPCI computers. With this CPCI family, Rittal has applied the concept of horizontal mounting of all functional components: 1, 2, 3 or 4 U sizes provide space for 2, 4, 6 or 8 rack-mounted computer units - plus fans and power packs. The housings of 300 mm depth are of economical sheet metal construction designed for mounting in 19" racks. The mounting level can be set back 100 mm. Even without the 19" mount 'ears', these housings are appealing as desktop or slot versions.

The computers can be packed close to each other, and CPCI computer cards are inserted from the front, the I/O boards at the rear. The horizontal mounting of hot-pluggable 1 U 19" power supply units permits configuration of redundant (n + 1) supplies with 2 U and higher housings. All power supplies are factory-fitted with decoupling diodes. Heat is efficiently dissipated from left to right (optionally also in the opposite direction). The 1 U housing comes serially equipped with three fans at the computer board side and four fans at the side of the power supply unit.

Almost no wiring is left to the user: The housings contain horizontal 6 U 64 bit CompactCPI monolithic backplanes with integrated power supply backplane - with H.110 bus at P4 with the 2, 3 and 4 U version. Solutions using custom backplanes are also possible, eg, with switch fabrics for quick fibre-optic connection (PICMG 2.16).

Standard finish is black, other (RAL) colour finishes are optional. All housings are EMC and ESD protected, have a ground terminal; depending on the application, they have board guide edges in red, green, yellow or grey, with ESD clips, preceding alignment pin and possible coding against wrong mounting. The rear AC input has an on/off switch, fuse, line filter and a grounding terminal stud. DC inputs in connection with hot-pluggable DC power supplies are optional.

There is a choice of three AC power supplies: 175 W, 200 W or 250 W. The power factor-adjusted, extended-range input accepts 90 to 264 V. The 5 V and 3,3 V outputs are designed for current sharing. Open-frame power supplies, DC power supplies, drive slots, direct-current fans with increased air flow, speed control and fault alarm are optional extras.
