Monolithic RF microtransmitters

Atmel has announced the first in its family of smart RF data transmission devices. Three different devices are available: the AT86RF401U, optimised for operation at 315MHz (US), the AT86RF401E, for 434 MHz (Europe), and a third device that can be configured externally for any output frequency by the user (AT86RF401X). Aimed at low cost, high volume automotive and portable wireless data markets, each smart RF microtransmitter contains an integrated PLL-stabilised frequency synthesizer, 6 dBm RF power amplifier, powerful in-system programmable AVR_ RISC processor, 2 KB of flash program memory and 128 bytes of EEPROM data memory.

These devices require only a crystal, single battery, a few passive components and switches, and a foil trace tuned loop antenna to create a complete wireless data transmitter. They are flexible with user-programmable output frequencies (250-450 MHz), RF output power (1-6 dBm), AVR clock frequency, output data rate (20 Kbps), and data pulse encoding techniques (eg NRZ, Manchester, etc).

The AT86RF401 is packaged in 20 lead TSSOP.
