Silicon Laboratories has released what it claims is the industry's smallest and most integrated single-chip USB to UART bridge. The CP2102 simplifies the upgrade from RS232 to USB by providing a complete solution with royalty-free drivers that eliminate the need for additional software. Being highly-integrated, the bridge reduces board space, simplifies design and reduces development time. It features on-board EEPROM, a voltage regulator, a USB transceiver and an integrated internal oscillator. This eliminates the cost and complexity of a crystal and other external components typically required in USB applications. The device also includes a complete USB 2.0 full-speed function controller, bridge control logic and a UART interface with transmit/receive buffers and modem handshake signals in a small 5 x 5 mm 28-pin MLP package.
