Leading semiconductor company, STMicroelectronics, in cooperation with Lernout & Hauspie, a recognised world leader in the voice recognition and text-to-speech software, Altec Lansing, a specialist in noise suppression and echo cancellation and Keyware Technologies a leader in speaker verification, have developed a cost-effective kit solution for handsfree car cellphones.
The kit that includes ST's Euterpe digital voice processor chip, a microcontroller (based on ST s popular ST10 processor core) with highly integrated input/output peripherals that manages the dialogue between the cellular phone and an optional display plus interfacing to the car stereo and other car functions, and state-of-the-art software from ST's three partners.
ST will integrate the hardware and software elements into a single package and market the complete solution to manufacturers of cellphones and other electronic equipment such as telematics boxes, both directly and through the development partners. The product has already been selected by telecom companies such as Telit Mobile Terminals, a European leader in cellular phone network infrastructure.
By bringing together ST's advanced embedded DSP hardware plus best-in-class software from leading voice processing companies, system makers are offered a very fast route to bring to market voice-enabled cellphones that are specially optimised for tough automotive conditions. Euterpe significantly enhances road safety by adding voice activation and incoming SMS messages reproduced by voice without distracting the driver and at the same time cancelling background noise to make phone conversations very clear
