Mitel offers a fully-featured programmable subscriber line interface circuit (SLIC) claimed to deliver highly reliable ringing in telecommunications access applications. The Mitel MT91610 features an advanced balanced ringing architecture that improves performance, while integrating complete functionality into a very compact, off-the-shelf device. It provides a complete line card interface between a switching system and a telephone line and reduces system design and manufacturing costs by eliminating the high-cost power components associated with ring generators.

Using sine wave ringing in excess of 70 V r.m.s., the MT91610 provides a superior ringing signal and reduces the risk of cross-talk on adjacent lines characteristic of trapezoidal architectures. Sine wave ringing is increasingly required by regulatory agencies because, unlike competing approaches, it operates with legacy equipment and is inherently more stable.

The MT91610 supports battery-fed, user-definable line and network balance impedance and off-chip audio gain programming. With loop lengths up to 2000 W, the device increases flexibility and ease of manufacture in access equipment designs ranging from low-featured PBXs to high-end digital loop carriers. The MT91610 goes into power-down mode when not in use to reduce power consumption in short-loop applications such as pair gain and wireless local loop. With on-hook transmission and top ring reversal, the MT91610 accommodates DID signalling in PBX and CLID applications. The device also offers unbalanced detection to provide superior detection in applications requiring ground start.

The MT91610 work with all international standards. To help address system requirements, the device accommodates a programmable current range between 20 mA and 30 mA, and loop lengths in excess of 1800 W in voltage foldover mode.

As an analog silicon-ringing SLIC, the MT91610 supports the growing number of applications that require balanced and localised ringing, including PBS, key telephone, pair gain, digital loop carrier, home gateway, SOHO, and remote access systems. The device also offers a system-level solution when combined with Mitel Semiconductor's DAA, CODEC, switching and DTMF Technology.

Unique Memec supplies the MT991610 in a 36-pin QSOP and supports the device with an evaluation board and Mitel dedicated application support.
