Microcontroller development platform for design and testing of embedded applications

Toshiba has launched a development platform that provides all of the hardware and software needed to design, prototype, test and debug embedded applications targeted at the industrial and home appliance market.

Based around the company's new 60 KB Flash 8-bit microcontroller, the TOPAS86FS49 Starter Kit platform can eliminate the requirement for additional and costly development and debug tools.

The TMP86FS49 microcontroller incorporates SST's SuperFlash memory with focused peripherals such as I²C, 10-bit ADCs and standard UART channels. The Starter Kit combines a hardware development board with debugging and development software, a flash memory programmer, and extensive software libraries, examples, and application notes.

In addition to the TMP86FS49 microcontroller itself, the development board supplied with the Starter Kit incorporates an LCD module, a keypad, trigger buttons, status LEDs, a serial EEPROM device, a buzzer, a loudspeaker connector, and a variety of interfaces including RS232, I²C, and USB connections. However, the key to simplifying program development lies in the integrated development environment (IDE) that Toshiba has built around the hardware.

This single framework provides everything the engineer needs for debugging, program building, editing and programming, and simulation. For instance - and unusually for an 8-bit solution - the IDE incorporates a powerful ROM monitor. This ROM monitor offers a number of debug and editing functions, allowing designers to use the Starter Kit in place of an expensive incircuit emulator (ICE). Furthermore, the incorporation of a simulator that provides full core and peripheral simulation allows engineers to continue their development work even if they are sharing the starter kit with a number of designers in a project team.
