Smaller and lighter alternative to D38999

Hiconnex is an official distributor for Glenair (UK, USA). Hiconnex is a South African supplier and manufacturer of custom cable assemblies and connectors for military, avionics, industrial and marine applications. Glenair is well known in the interconnect industry as one of the world's largest manufacturers of military standard and commercial connector accessories.

One of the most common design requirements for interconnect technology used in high-reliability applications is size and weight reduction and complexity in military air, sea and ground applications. The available space for interconnect cabling is reduced when more and more systems and controls are being accommodated in the latest generations of land vehicle, fighter jet or Navy ship - and still weigh less than before. Reducing connector package size and weight thus becomes a critical concern.

Glenair developed the Series 80 'Mighty Mouse' connector precisely for such situations. At less than half the size and weight of high-density connectors such as the D38999, it has comparable environmental and mechanical performance.

Says Hiconnex managing director, Hitesh Pema: "The Series 80 'Mighty Mouse' connector is designed for high-reliability commercial and military interconnect applications that require robust environmental performance and reduced size and weight. It offers virtually equal performance to MIL-DTL-38999 interconnects with up to 71% weight and 52% size savings for similar contact layouts."

Originally developed as a smaller and lighter alternative to D38999 connectors for military aerospace applications such as attack helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles, the Series 80 'Mighty Mouse' today serves in dozens of safety critical military, medical, industrial and geo-physical applications. It is supplied in five standard coupling designs: Light Duty UN Thread; Heavy Duty Double-Start; 'Aqua Mouse' Harsh Environmental; Bayonet; and Quick-Disconnect.

All the connectors in the Series 80 family are available with rear-release crimp contacts or with PC tail or solder cup terminations. Shell styles, including in-line plugs, square-flange and jam-nut receptacles are available for all types. Integrated banding platforms for EMI shield termination or rear-end threads for back-shell accessories are also standard throughout the line.
