Change is the one certainty that we have all come to expect in the electronics industry. Design engineers and chip manufacturers are constantly pushing the boundaries of possibility.

Smaller and faster, larger scale integration, more powerful and cheaper. New devices are forcing manufacturers to adapt their products in order to remain competitive.

Environmental considerations will hasten the impending requirement of lead-free technology. The numerous technological advancements have added to the challenge that manufacturers and designers are faced with. Along with large scale integration comes the birth of new packaging advancements. However, the bulk of outdated machinery is unable to adequately cope with these new technologies.

The life-cycles of automated production and testing equipment are becoming shorter as technology advances. Due to the accelerated pace of technological advancement, production equipment is often replaced within five years in countries such as Europe and Japan. It is recognised that outdated equipment is counter-productive in those markets.

In January 2004, Fine Pitch invested in the latest state-of-the-art, multimillion rand, production machinery. At the heart of its new line is a Juki 2060L high speed pick-and-place machine, designed for fine pitch applications. The machine's advanced three-dimensional vision and laser systems enable precise placement of minute 0402 chips and BGAs. The Juki 2060L allows panels of up to 41 by 30 cm in size to be produced.

Since the company believes that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, it has chosen equally-competent machinery for all the processes in the new production line. A new SMT convection reflow oven, which is designed for lead-free production, and a new screen printer, complement the Juki 2060L. The production area at the factory also boasts anti-static flooring.

Conventional leaded (THP) assembly is also offered. A German-made lead-free compatible wave-soldering machine was purchased in April 2005, as well as new cut and crop equipment for axial and radial components. Component procurement is a further service offered.

Fine Pitch has experienced staff that gladly assist customers with design tips to ensure production-friendly products, and an in-house PCB design facility is also available. The company prides itself in its service levels, and is in a position to purchase further up-to-date production lines, as required.
