Illuminated modular jacks support power-over-Ethernet

10 August 2005 Interconnection

Erni has expanded its broad line of integrated magnetic modular jacks with new versions that support power over Ethernet (PoE).

For applications that meet IEEE802.3af requirements (PoE) and transferring up to 15 watts of power, these modular jacks with integrated magnetics are equipped with either hubs or circuitry for DTEs (data terminal equipment) that can accept power over either data pairs or unused pairs.

These provide the ability to supply power along with the data on a CAT5 cable up to 100 m. It eliminates the need for additional external power supplies and allows the hub to provide 48 V d.c. at up to 350 mA. This voltage can then be converted to 5 or 3,3 V to power up the PHY and DTE circuits. The PoE modular jacks are ideal for applications like VoIP phones, wireless base stations, remote cameras, etc.

The new modular jacks with integrated magnetics for 10/100 are available in right-angle single-port or ganged 1x2 and 1x4 configurations. The modular jacks have shields with panel flanges on top and on both sides for effective grounding. Integrated LEDs are available in a variety of colours.

The Erni modular jack family with integrated magnetics can be customised to meet the needs of the circuit design. Connectors for all Ethernet data rates are available. The ModJacks are based on a patented design and specified to meet FCC and IEEE 802.3 requirements for voltage isolation and performance. The products are offered in single port, multiport ganged, vertical and tab-up configurations.
