New niobium oxide capacitors deliver highly reliable performance

AVX has developed a capacitor, designed to deliver low ESR, high capacitance, and high ripple current capacitor performance. The new niobium oxide multi-anode (NOM) family of capacitors, designated the OxiCap Series, uses advanced technology to provide design engineers with a safe (non-burning) high resistance failure mode.

The OxiCap NOM features a multi-anode configuration in a standard 'E' case package.

Ideal for power supply decoupling and high-speed data processing applications where very high capacitance and ultra low ESR are required, the company says that these capacitors provide excellent electrical characteristics with ESR down to 30 mΩ - an ideal choice to fill the performance gap between ceramic multilayer capacitors and aluminium electrolytics.

AVX developed the OxiCap Series in response to the industry's need for capacitors that can offer superior reliability and performance, while responding to the demand for a product that can be provided efficiently through the supply chain, as well as satisfy the environmentally friendly ('lead free' and 'halogen free') requirements.

Niobium oxide is a low-density material, providing lighter overall package weight. In addition, the multi-anode cap replaces up to three single-anode caps, delivering higher performance while reducing board space and placement costs. The OxiCap series also solves the problems of capacitance drop and DC leakage encountered with aluminium electrolytics. A single OxiCap capacitor exhibits ESR values that normally would require up to 10 aluminium capacitors to achieve. Another unique advantage with OxiCap is the voltage-derating characteristic. Because of the high reliability and safe failure mode, OxiCap NOM Series capacitors are derated at only 20% compared to the standard 50% for other similar products.

The OxiCap multi-anode capacitors ('E' case size) feature capacitance values ranging from 220 µF to 470 μF with ±20% capacitance tolerance and -55°C to +125°C operating temperatures. Working voltage rating options are 2,5, 4,0 and 6,3 V d.c.
