CMOS amplifiers boast unprecedented low noise

Generally known for their low input bias current, CMOS amplifiers are inherently noisier than bipolar designs. However, Linear Technology has released a new class of CMOS amplifiers claimed to have voltage noise like bipolar amplifiers. The LTC6241 dual and LTC6242 quad amplifiers have exceptionally low noise of 550 nVp-p in the 0,1 Hz to 10 Hz region - a threefold reduction in voltage noise over existing CMOS amplifiers, claims Linear. Additionally, the devices have superior DC precision, featuring 1 pA bias current and less than 125 μV input offset voltage. Offset voltage drift is guaranteed under 2,5 μV/°C while the high voltage gain of 124 dB keeps down system error. The 18 MHz gain bandwidth and 10 V/μs slew rate at a low 2,2 mA max per amplifier make these amplifiers versatile and suited for use in a wide variety of signal processing applications. Their 3 pF input capacitance also makes them suited for high source impedance applications.
