Reference design to produce sub-$20 cellphones
10 August 2005
Electronics Technology
Infineon Technologies has launched a reference design for 'ultra low-cost handsets' which it claims will enable handsets to be produced for under $20. According to the company, the use of its new ULC reference platform (which is based on a single-chip GSM solution) will allow the costs for GSM handsets with SMS functionality to be reduced by nearly one half in the near future. This from the current figure of around $35 to under $20. It says these costs cover the entire mobile phone, including all electronic components, PCB, connectors, casing with keypad and display, all software components, rechargeable batteries, charger, packaging and documentation. The ULC reference platform includes a single-chip GSM radio/baseband, other RF components, power supply, memory, OS, drivers, GSM protocol stack and a reference MMI. Volume production is expected to start in the first quarter of 2006, which means that ultra-low-cost handsets could be in the shops a few months later, Infineon says.
