TransFlash connectors for world's smallest memory card system

Molex has introduced two types of connectors for the new TransFlash memory card format, the world's smallest removable memory card system. The new connectors accept industry standard TransFlash memory cards, which are smaller than a postage stamp and can store up to 256 MB of data.
Molex's TransFlash connectors save about 70% of space compared to miniSD versions, says the company. The connectors are designed for use in cellphones and other mobile devices that use removable flash memory cards to store data such as text, games, photos, video and audio.
These TransFlash connectors feature both hinged and push-push (push lock/push release) versions that include metal shielding and integral solder tabs for ESD protection. The hinged version is used in a similar way as with SIM cards, which are not normally removed after installing. The hinged version has a slide lock that is easily actuated by hand and stays open in various positions to facilitate card insertion. The hinge function also allows the card to be inserted from a top angle, making sequence pins for power on/off unnecessary. The push-push version includes an integral friction lock and cam mechanism for secure and user-friendly card insertion and extraction.
Both versions are eight-circuit SMT designs that include solder tabs for secure PCB retention and additional grounding. The push-push version is rated at 100 V and 5000 cycles durability; the hinged version is rated at 10 V and 1000 cycles. Both are rated at 0,5 A. Gold-plated contacts provide good electrical properties and are lead-free. The push-push version includes first-mate/last break terminals to provide power on/off support.
When used with adapters, the TransFlash connectors are fully compatible with systems that support SD and miniSD.
