31-button I²C remote controller

22 February 2006 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

Maxim has introduced a wired, remote-controller receiver IC for portable media players. The MAX11041 decodes up to 31 resistor values on an external, wired remote controller composed of low-cost pushbutton/membrane switches and 1% resistors.

In contrast to conventional multibutton remote-control implementations, the company says the MAX11041's versatile architecture allows use of standard 3,5 mm headphone jacks by multiplexing the remote signal onto the audio path through external DC-blocking capacitors. Alternatively, these devices can use a single dedicated wire over the fourth connector of a standard 4-pin stereo headphone jack.

The MAX11041 continuously polls the keys while consuming only 8 μW (5 μA at 1,6 V to 3,6 V). An I²C interface with 8-byte FIFO and interrupt notifies the host microcontroller of keystroke presence and records up to four different key states. Besides detecting keys, this device records key duration for advanced user-interface features. It detects simultaneous keys and implements a hold function to prevent inadvertent key presses. It also features automatic key debounce and switch-chatter rejection.

The MAX11041 comes in 4 x 4 mm, 12-pin TQFN and 2 x 2 mm UCSP packages.
