Full range of power output transistors for consumer and professional audio amplification

22 February 2006 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

ON Semiconductor has expanded on its range of high performance audio transistors, with a new family that features internal bias control. Designed for use in both high-end and cost-competitive consumer audio applications, and high-power professional sound systems, the new ThermalTrak devices improve overall sound quality and simplify design, according to the company.

The unique ThermalTrak technology works to eliminate aggravating warm-up time and enables quick and precise bias adjustment. Realtime temperature sensing allows designers to monitor operating temperatures more accurately, and works to improve both sound quality and bias stability. By eliminating the need for output drive compensation circuitry and costly manual bias adjustments, amplifier design is greatly simplified.

"ThermalTrak has changed how designers implement power audio amplification," said Mike Paquette, director of ON Semiconductor's Power Discrete product group. "Typical bias schemes often require a designer to slightly under-bias amplifier output devices so that thermal runaway does not occur. This prevents the amplifier from achieving true high fidelity performance. Put simply, ThermalTrak output transistors are single-device solutions that enable true high fidelity performance."

The devices

The medium frequency NJL21193DG (PNP) and the NJL21194DG (NPN) are 250 V devices that offer a 200 W power rating and a 4 MHz bandwidth. With a high power rating and superior safe operating area (SOA) these devices are ideal for high-power professional audio applications that require high reliability. Such applications include professional sound reinforcement and large venue PA sound systems.

The previously released high frequency (30 MHz) family of devices includes the 180 W NJL0302DG (PNP) and NJL0281DG (NPN), the 200 W NJL1302DG (PNP) and NJL3281DG (NPN), and the 250 W NJL4302DG (PNP) and NJL4281DG (NPN). The high power and excellent gain matching of these devices makes them ideal for consumer audio amplifiers and professional audio applications that use either single or multiple paralleled output devices. Such applications include car audio, home stereo and home theatre systems.

The ThermalTrak devices are offered in a standard size 5-lead, TO-264 package.
