Highly-integrated COM Express PC module is very small

8 March 2006 Computer/Embedded Technology

Digital-Logic has added to its high-reliable, high-performance smartModule series. The new COM Express PC module is the smallest processor module with 1,66 GHz Intel Core Duo Processor L2400 and dimensions of only 115 x 70 x 15 mm (LxWxH).

The small fanless computer features high video performance, supports HDTV and offers four PCI Express lanes. It is based on the Mobile Intel 945GM Express chipset, which includes the Intel 82945GM Graphic Memory Controller Hub and Intel I/O Controller Hub 7-M. The front side bus supports 667 MHz. The computer module provides all standard PC interfaces such as VGA, COM1/2, LPT1, a floppy interface, an IrDA interface, two PS/2 ports for mouse and keyboard, and eight USB V2.0 ports.

The standard version further includes a TV output and an Audio 7.1 sound with eight-channel output. A P-ATA and two S-ATA150 hard disk interfaces are available for mass storage. All necessary power supplies and power management functions are integrated.

As main memory up to 1 Gbyte of DDR2 RAM are available. CPU and memory are mounted exchangeable, but are mechanically protected against vibrations and shocks. As all power saving functions of the new chipset are supported, the SMX945-L2400 module consumes only between 10 and 20 W (depending on performance).

It runs all common operating systems, such as Windows XP, QNX, Linux, etc, and is equipped with a Flash BIOS with dual BIOS option. The module operates at a standard -20 to +60°C, but at a lower clock rate, also operates at -40 to +70°C.
