Antenna for location-tracking of offenders

8 March 2006 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

Poynting Antennas has developed an antenna and a unit that is used in the tracking of offenders. The unit, which is strapped to a person's leg like a bracelet, is used to monitor the individual's compliance with area confinement. A GPS unit obtains the geographical location of the unit and relays this data to a central office via GSM.

The compact unit uses an integrated tri-band antenna that has been custom-designed by Poynting Antennas for optimal performance within the unit (the antenna is integrated in the top of the unit).

One of Poynting's Business Units focuses on omni-directional, small internal and external antennas for multiband cellular applications. Many internal antennas are developed as ODM/OEM units for specific equipment manufacturers. According to Jones Kalunga, business unit manager of CCIA (Cellular Compact and Integrated Antennas) the requirement for integrated antennas has grown tremendously in the last year due to the proliferation of wireless devices being developed. A variety of applications depend on the reliable communication that is supplied by a well-designed integrated antenna.

Applications that it has designed antennas for include vehicle tracking, fleet management, people tracking, security, 3G datacards; least cost routers (LCR), phone shops and pay phones.
