Royal Philips Electronics has added two new devices to its GreenChip family of energy-efficient ICs. The Philips GreenChip PC is a chipset featuring an innovative, all-in-one design that it says increases the overall efficiency of desktop PC power supplies beyond 80%. The GreenChip SR, a secondary control IC for notebook adapters, improves the efficiency of laptop computer adapters by 3 to 5%, it says.
The Philips GreenChip PC introduces a new topology that makes it easier and more cost-effective for PC power supply manufacturers to comply with energy efficiency specifications such as 80 PLUS and Energy Star. It is an advanced system that integrates the standby supply into the main converter, reducing the number of external components required. Local secondary regulation also solves primary-side feedback issues and significantly improves cross-regulation.
Most current desktop PC power supplies are only 60 to 70% efficient when operating, wasting the rest as heat. 80% efficient or greater power supplies can help businesses and home users save energy and reduce their electricity costs significantly.
The Philips GreenChip SR (TEA1761 and TEA1762) is the only secondary control IC available to integrate both synchronous rectification and primary feedback/control functionality, all in one. Used in notebook adapter designs, the GreenChip SR can help achieve 3 to 5% gains in energy efficiency. It also offers a wide operation range of 8,5 V to 38 V, minimising the number of external components required and enabling simpler designs.
