Smartcards feature a high level of reliability in terms of security. There has been rapid growth world-wide in digital satellite broadcasting which makes use of this type of smartcard. Hirose's smartcard connector, the ID2M series, was developed for use with digital satellite broadcast receivers and are considered to be user-friendly.
Although developed for this purpose, the ID2M can be used in a wide range of applications.
The ID2M features include a card-detection switch that detects whether the smartcard has been inserted securely, and a large insertion opening face that aids card insertion (guaranteed 10 000 mating cycles). For contact reliability Hirose uses a two-point contact structure using two springs. Also as standard, the ID2M is equipped with a 'board provisional fastening boss' for a 1,6 mm thickness on the PC board. This is a design feature that keeps the board in place at time of reflow.
