Circular waterproof connectors have push-pull latching

17 May 2006 Interconnection

More electronic equipment is being designed for outdoor use, so the requirements for waterproof connectors are increasing. Hirose's HR30 is a push-pull latched connector that has been designed and tested to IP67, enabling it to withstand submersion to 1 metre for up to half an hour, when mated.

This miniature circular connector is available with the 3, 6, contact positions housed in a 12,6 mm shell and the 10, 12, contact positions packaged in a shell 15,5 mm diameter, all have a lightweight plastic housing that is totally resistant to corrosion. The range includes plugs, jacks and receptacles with solder bucket, crimp or PCB mount contacts and options for waterproof caps that fit onto unmated connectors.

Mating the connectors is achieved by aligning two arrows and pushing the plug home, an audible click assures positive mating. The plug is un-mated by retracting the outer sleeve on the plug. Mis-insertion is not possible due to a five key polarisation system.

HR30 uses gold plated contacts, rated to 2 A, with the 3-position rated at 5 A. All are designed to withstand 1000 mating cycles.

Behind the plug's collette style cable strain relief is a 10 mm long gasket used to seal the cable against water ingress, solder bucket contacts and screw-together assembly allow HR30 to be assembled without the use of specialist tools.
