Highly integrated audio processor needs no microcontroller

28 June 2006 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

Maxim has introduced a complete audio processor with a simple, debounced pushbutton interface. The MAX5406 integrates all the op-amps and potentiometers necessary for controlling standard audio functions: balance, volume, tone, treble, bass, bass boost, and ambience. For ultimate flexibility and space savings, the MAX5406 eliminates the need for an external microcontroller to control functions or respond to the pushbuttons. It processes audio signals without a microcontroller to control the volume advance rate, balance, or tone. Its debounced pushbutton interface can be used with any momentary contact pushbutton switch, although it can still be controlled with a microcontroller. The MAX5406 also has integrated passive filters to reject RF interference. Bass and treble corner frequencies are set using small external ceramic capacitors. Stereo separation can be changed or delayed signals added for 'ambience.' It can also create pseudo-stereo. A shutdown feature reduces supply current to 1,5 mA. Total harmonic distortion is less than 0,01% and the output noise is less than 25 mV rms. It operates from +2,7 to +5,25 V, or ±2,7 V dual supply. It comes in 4 x 4 mm TQFN package.
