Improved audio DSP offers more performance and features

26 July 2006 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

Boosting the audio processing performance of its flagship 32-bit, dual-core audio digital signal processor (DSP) family, Cirrus Logic has introduced the new CS49530 family.

With processing power of 1,8 giga operations per second (300 million instructions per second), this family delivers a complete digital audio processor for multichannel audio applications such as audio/video receivers (AVRs), says Cirrus.

Featuring true parallel processing, the CS49530 family allows manufacturers to support extensive audio post-processing simultaneous with a multichannel audio decoder. With enhanced on-chip RAM and ROM memory, it also reduces system costs by eliminating the need for external memory. Within its dual-core structure, CS49530 can operate as two high-performance DSPs in a single IC for efficient parallel processing. This structure improves performance, as each core performs standard audio decoding and post processing simultaneously, according to the manufacturer.

The CS49530 comes bundled with Cirrus Logic's Intelligent Room Calibration software, which provides both automatic room equalisation and synchronisation of timing of sounds to the ear from the various in-room speakers. Cirrus Logic provides full software support through a full suite of audio algorithms, which are built into the IC's on-chip ROM.

In addition to eliminating the need for external Flash memory, the CS49531 further saves system costs by performing on-chip synchronisation of audio with digital television video images which, in many systems, is a task requiring additional external memory.
